- 1 tsp coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- ½ tsp garam masala powder (optional)
- 1 cup warm water or as required
- Few coriander leaves chopped
- Juice of half lemon
Instructions:
1. Heat oil in a large frypan and add cumin, bay leaf, dry red chilies and sauté for 2 minutes.
2. Add ginger garlic paste, onion, and fry until the onions soften.
3. Add tomato, green chilies, and fry until they begin to break down so that they can be mashed well into the gravy.
4. Now add turmeric powder and chilly red paste to this mixture and mix well so that it begins to release its flavors into the mixture.
5. Add coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and salt to this mixture and mix well so that all the flavors blend well into the gravy.
6. Add warm water to this mixture and bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and then add rohu fish fillets (cut into medallions).
7. Stir gently so that the fish doesn’t break apart from the sauce.
8. Once the water in the pan comes to a boil again, cover the pan using a lid and let it cook for 7-8 minutes or until the fish is tender and the gravy reaches the desired thickness.
9. Now, add lemon juice to this mixture and stir well.
10. Remove from heat and serve hot with Naan or any bread.
Tips: ‘
1. If you are in a hurry, use a microwave for cooking the fish fillets instead of cooking them on an open flame.
2. You can add more spices and salt to taste depending on your personal preference. Use asafoetida if you want to omit onions and garlic from this recipe.
3. You can add vegetables like potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, beans, or peas while making the gravy.
4. For that delicious gravy in the picture, I added 1 cup of water to the mixture, sautéed all the veggies, and after adding the turmeric powder and chilly red powder, I let it boil for 3 minutes.
5. You can also garnish with coriander leaves for that authentic North Indian taste you are craving.
6. You can also use frozen rohu fillets and cook on low heat to get a nice thick sauce out of it!
