What You Need
- Mackerel fish – 1 kg. (For 2-3 servings)
- Black mustard seeds – 1 tablespoon
- Mustard seeds – 3-4 tablespoons (Chilly)
- Chilies – 4-5 pods or 2 teaspoons red chili powder or 2 tablespoons green chili paste (or use both)
- Vinegar – 1 cup
- Tamarind paste – 2 tablespoons (optional)
- Garlic – 6-8 cloves (to be crushed)
- Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tablespoon
- Coriander leaves – 3 tablespoons chopped
- Salt as per taste
- Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
- Cooking oil
Preparation of Curry
Step 1. Wash and clean the fish (Mackerel fish) and dry it. Cut the fish into small pieces. Add salt and turmeric powder, mix well and keep in a bowl. Keep aside for 30 minutes so that the fish gets marinated properly.
Step 2. Crush garlic and ginger together to make a fine paste. Keep aside in a bowl.
Step 3. In a pan, add black mustard seeds, add oil and cook for 1 minute on medium flame.
In the meantime, mix all the ingredients for the curry paste in a bowl and keep it aside for later use.
Step 4. After 30 minutes of marinating the fish, add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Mix well, mix everything well and then keep aside for further use.
Step 5. Add the oil to a wok and let it heat up.
Step 6. Add mustard seeds, ginger garlic paste and sauté till the raw smell of garlic goes off.
Step 7. Add black peppercorns, red chilies, and chopped tomatoes. Cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame.
Step 8. Cook for 5-7 minutes more at high flame till the oil starts to separate from the sides of the mixture of ingredients mentioned above (adding in a little more oil if necessary).
Step 9. Add tamarind paste and cook for 2 minutes at medium flame.
Step 10. Add salt, tamarind juice, and vinegar to the mixture of ingredients mentioned above. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the raw smell of vinegar goes off.
Step 11. At this point, strain the marinated fish (Mackerel) and remove any bones or pieces of flesh from it (leave only skin and bones).
Step 12. Add the fish pieces to the curry paste and mix well. Cook on medium heat till the oil comes out of the sides.
Step 13. Increase the flame and cook for 2-3 minutes or until oil separates from the sides of a mixture of ingredients mentioned above (adding in a little more oil if necessary).
Step 14. Put some water in a bowl to ensure that you do not overcook this Mackerel Fish Curry Recipe. Also, add some salt if required. Mix it well frequently while cooking.
Step 15. Add chopped coriander leaves and stir a few times.
